HUGO Victor (1802-1885)
L.A.S. "Victor Hugo", Hauteville House April 22 [1864?], to Jules JANIN; 1 page in-8 on blue paper, address with countersignature "V.H.". (small tear at one corner by breaking the seal, slight slits at the bottom. Nice letter to the critic. "Yes, my glorious and dear companion in this great nineteenth century, yes, my eloquent confrere, I love praise, on condition that it is elegant, noble and high, on condition that it has all the graces and pride of style, on condition that it comes from a serene conscience and a valiant heart, on condition that it is masterful and gentle, on condition that it is signed Jules Janin. For my part, I try not to be unworthy of it; when you pass in my shadow, my branches salute; I am the forest and you are the consul."
