HUGO Victor (1802-1885)
L.A.S. "Victor Hugo", 19 August [1836?], to the Comte de RAMBUTEAU; 2 pages in-8, address. He is delighted with the assurance given to him by the prefect "as regards the beautiful and noble roof of the Town Hall. I am all the more happy about this, since I will now be able to reassure the artists, and the antique archivists among whom there is general anxiety. Yesterday several of them came to my house very alarmed and did not leave me until I had formally promised to write to you. What redoubled their fears was the announcement made by several newspapers (I held one in my hands) that the roofs of the Town Hall were going to be lowered and that the angle would be altered. Now everything is illuminated to everyone's satisfaction. I was quite right to trust your taste and your lights. To be Prefect of the Seine, it is not enough to have the capacity of the administrator, you must also have the intelligence of the artist. You meet this double condition to the highest degree. The City of Paris is to be congratulated for this... A business card of the Count and Countess de Rambuteau has been stuck to the second page, offering this letter to Mr. Santard.
