HEREDIA José-Maria de (1842-1905)
L.A.S. and L.S. "J.M. de Heredia", Paris 1869-1870, to Mme Auguste PENQUER, in Brest; 4 and 5 pages in-8, envelopes (slight traces of assembly). Friendly letters to the Breton poetess. 12 January 1869. He read "in one stroke your Vélleda, for here she is yours today, the daughter of Châteaubriand, whom you have adorned with the supreme adornment of poetry" . He sends his copy to his mother in Cuba, among "the hazards of war and revolution"... He recommends sending copies to Armand Gouzien, Hippolyte Philibert, Arsène Houssaye; he also gives the addresses of Leconte de Lisle and Sully-Prudhomme... 11th January 1870. Dictated letter to his wife, on the sadness of the past year: the exile of members of his family, the health of his wife, a near blindness, a move... However, "I was proud to be in your glorious company in the new collection of verses published by Lemerre" [Le Parnasse contemporain], and he was able to hear, at a reading committee meeting, "your beautiful poem admirably read by Mr. T. de Banville. You have never written anything nobler, more vigorous and more passionate"... Leconte de Lisle is disappointed not to receive an academic award for his translations of Homer... An L.A.S. of Alexandre DUMAS fils, [November 20, 1880, to Émile Cottinet] is attached.
