GONCOURT Jules de (1830-1870)
3 autograph BOOKS; about 16, 10 and 11 in-8 pages written on the front in 3 small sewn notebooks (some passages have been cut out to be pasted in a manuscript). Notes for works on art, women and characters of the 18th century. Notes taken from correspondence and handwritten short stories from 1732 to 1739. It is above all the world of letters, arts, theatre and opera that is brought to life in these pages, especially through numerous anecdotes about actresses and dancers. These notebooks were notably used for the elaboration of Intimate Portraits of the 18th century (Dentu, 1857), subtitled "New Studies from Autograph Letters and Unpublished Documents". One notebook concerns the private correspondence of Abbé Jean-Bernard Leblanc (1707-1781), to whom a chapter of the Portraits intimes is devoted... Another notebook collects elements of Voltaire's correspondence concerning theatrical life; thus : "Miss Gossin, one of the beauties of the Francois theatre, has just given birth to two boys by the Marquis de Vassé. It has been noticed that for a very long time in the family of this lord, they have only had twins and even one of them looks so much like him that one gets confused at any moment". The third notebook picks up the "News by hand" and libels or political pamphlets... PROVENANCE Léon HENNIQUE (sale 15 February 1980, n° 69)
