POEM autograph signed "Théophile Gautier", Sonnet, July 19, 1866; 1 page in-8 (fine laminated paper, slight ink smudges). This sonnet, inspired by Mme Marguerite Dardenne de la Grangerie, was given to him for his birthday, July 20, 1866, at the Château de Chamarande; published in the Gazette des enfants on July 7, 1867, it was collected in the "Poésies nouvelles, poésies inédites et poésies posthumes" of the Poésies complètes (Charpentier, 1875-1876). A woman of letters (under several pseudonyms), Marguerite du Closel had married the journalist Albert Dardenne de la Grangerie. "There is, in legend, a martyred virgin Who leads on a leash a hydra with tortuous folds. Near a cogwheel, holding a lily in her hand, the Angel of Urbino painted her, and the world admires her. [...] Martyrdom, flower, jewel, virtue, perfume, beauty, All this simply means: "Daisy!"
