PIERRE JEANNERET (1896-1967)
Exceptional pair of X-Leg Armchairs by Pierre Jeanneret 33 7/16 x 24 13/16 x 27 3/16 in. Born in 1896, the Swiss architect and designer is celebrated for his international career as much as his collaboration with his cousin Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, known as Le Corbusier. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva where he won the first prize for architecture, sculpture and painting. When he arrived in Paris in 1921, he entered the studio of architect Auguste Perret as an apprentice. His collaboration with his cousin began in 1922. Together, they published in 1927, The five points of modern architecture, where they developed the primordial elements of their architectural doctrine : the free facade, the ribbon window, the free plan, the stilts and the roof terrace. During this period, the two cousins collaborated with Charlotte Perriand on projects of luxurious villas, more modest dwellings and the design of furniture characterized by pure lines emphasizing the materials with simplicity Pierre Jeanneret’s career reached its peak in 1950, when the two cousins were asked to build the new capital of Punjab, Chandigarh. As the architect in chief, the artist designed the urban plan, the architecture of most of the city’s buildings and furniture. His line of action remains the rationality of the plan and the use of concrete. He chooses to open his creations on the outside. This project is still a success and attracts many new inhabitants today. The architect died in 1967, two years after his return to Switzerland. This teak furniture set was been designed by the architect and furniture designer Pierre Jeanneret (1896-1967) in 1955-1956. At this time, Pierre Jeanneret, on invitation of his cousin Le Corbusier (1887-1965), went to Chandigarh in India, to start a brand new project: the construction of a new city, between societal and architectural utopia. He will be chief architect and designer of the urban development. On this occasion, he will create a type of furniture, intended to equip all the administrative buildings and some individual houses.
