LE TRIEU DIEN (né en 1943)
Memories 2, 2011 Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right and titled on the back 60 x 80 cm 23 5/8 x 31 ½ in. EXHIBITION Exhibition Wan Keping and the Trieu Dien, February 2015, Galerie Dumonteil, Paris Le Trieu Dien A Vietnamese artist, Le Trieu Dien (b. 1943) studied at Phu Tho Polytechnic University in Ho Chi Minh City where he still works. Between figuration and abstraction, he applies himself to represent his history on canvas, and in particular his memories of the landscapes of the Mekong Delta. His pictorial language is close to a writing, he uses repetition and particular signs, some of which carry a meaning. The triangle for example can represent a Vietnamese hat or the roof of a house. He also accumulates ancient symbols of Viet, Khmer and other minority cultures living in his region. These symbols are found on the stone and on the architecture. The scenes are superimposed, and the artist's first impression of insouciance gives way to an understanding of the work on several levels. Memories 2 is undoubtedly the memory of a city scene, bicycles and cars crossing each other, colours blending into geometric interlacing. On the contrary, Alluvial, which refers to alluvial deposits transported by water currents, often at the origin of the fertility of the earth and the growth of plants, shows a river scene, probably of the Mekong. A man wearing the traditional Vietnamese hat observes from the ground the boats that are schematized in origami, in a scene that invites us to contemplate.
