ANCIENS TERRITOIRES BURGONDO-FLAMANDS, XVIE SIÈCLE
Throne of Grace Wooden sculpture with traces of polychromy We join a Christ The latter, probably colonial work of the 17th century (damaged, restored) H. H. : 92 cmRemovable cross Christ H. 32 cm (Worming, accidents and missing parts, stripping of the face, accidents to the feet, Christ's cross missing, Christ not attached to the sculpture) Provenance: Culan castle, to the current owner. This carved group in polychromed wood presents the fusion of two subjects particularly widespread in the former Burgundian-Flemish territories at the turn of the 16th century. It illustrates the theme of the Throne of Grace: God the Father wearing the pontifical tiara and clothed in the cope is represented in majesty, seated on a curule seat. It thus takes up the iconography of Saint Peter as it appeared in the Mosan Valley and the Southern Netherlands from the 14th century. He holds his crucified son between his two hands (note that the cross is missing). As can be seen in the beautiful example in the church of Saint Sauveur in Noirémont (Oise), this sculpture is also inspired by the representation of the Trinity which spread in the North and East of France from the end of the 15th century: this iconography presents God, Christ and the dove of the Holy Spirit gliding from the Father's beard towards the head of his son. This image illustrates the dogma of the Trinity, instituted in 325 at the Council of Nicaea and whose feast day was fixed in 1334 by John XXII to give new impetus to Trinitarian piety. This representation of the throne of grace materializes the text from the Epistle to the Hebrews (4:16): "Jesus, the Son of God, was tested in all respects in our likeness, yet without sin. Let us therefore go forth with full assurance to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to be helped in due time. »
