PROVENANCE Collection of Mrs Kinuyo Tanaka, Tokyo Private collection, Paris Akira Tanaka Akira Tanaka was born in Japan in 1918 and settled permanently in France in 1959. A figurative artist who is nevertheless unclassifiable, Tanaka travels in Europe, particularly in Italy, Spain and Portugal, where he completes his Parisian inspirations. Attached to representing everyday people, modest characters with occupations that have now disappeared, Tanaka manages to capture in paint the characters of these passers-by and craftsmen. Often varying the formats, Tanaka remains faithful to his coarse linen canvas. His works are sometimes dark but also colorful and populated with a heterogeneous crowd. This is notably the case of the Stamp Dealer, from 1972, a colourful work presenting amateurs in the artist's characteristic style. This work perfectly retranscribes the atmosphere which reigns between the philatelists, the nostalgia which can emanate from a stamp market and finally the very successful art of the color and its effects very visible in the clothing and the nuances of the sky of this painting.
