1984 BMW M635 CSi
Mythical engine Nearly 25 000 € of restoration in 2016-2017 Remarkable example French registration Chassis number : WBAEE31050105010908 The ABS light came on intermittently a few days before the show. The mechanics work normally, it must be a simple contactor. If the M saga started with the M1 developed specifically for racing, the first production model to benefit from the know-how of BMW's Motorsport department was the 635 CSi E24 coupe. Already highly regarded for its comfort, spacious interior, smooth and melodious engines, as well as for its racy lines attributed to French designer Paul Barcq because of its shark-nose front end, BMW's 6 Series Coupe suffered from a lack of performance. The Motorsport department of the Bavarian company will offer him a cure of vitamins by marketing at the end of 1984, the M635 CSi. This one profits from the mythical 6-cylinder M88 of the M1, of 3.5l equipped with an aluminium cylinder head with 24 valves developing 286 HP with 6 500 tr/mn. The BMW inline six's preparation allows it to approach 260 km/h and to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds. With only a little more than 3,800 examples produced (equipped with the M88 engine), the M635 CSi has become over time a true GT to collect. Rare, in perfect condition and with low mileage, this youngtimer is a sure bet and its value has continued to rise in recent years. The M635 CSi presented in these pages is one of the very first cars to leave the factory, as it was first registered on November 30th 1984. It is therefore part of the first series equipped with the M88 engine from the M1. Of Italian origin, this 6 series remained on the peninsula in the Bergamo region, until 2016 when a French collector acquired it for €29,000. Once the administrative formalities were completed and the certificate of authentication obtained from BMW France, the new owner then began some restoration work: complete painting of the body, some parts changes, changes of fluids and filters, the amount of this first phase amounted to a little over € 8,000. Satisfied with the work done but wanting to get a mechanic in new condition, the collector then starts in 2017 a complete rebuilding of the engine, the gearbox and the electronic management of the dashboard. The clutch is changed as well as the air conditioning compressor. The total cost was nearly €16,000! With only 157,200 km on the odometer, this M635 CSi is a magnificent example, carefully and intelligently restored, having kept its nicely patinated black leather upholstery. A sought-after youngtimer and a true GT with remarkable performance for its time, there is still time to make a reasonable purchase before the price skyrockets.
