Very rare Persian islamic astrolabe in bronze and brass. The mater features five double-sided tympanums and a table at the bottom. The rete contains the positions of 26 stars. The back features a shadow square and the names of the designers and makers. "Designed by the two humble men Muhammad Bâquir and Muhammad Husayn al-Yazdî in the year 1017 of the Hegira" i.e. 1647 AD (al Yazdî: from the city of Yaz) and "Was engraved by the two humble men Muhammad Amîr and Muhammad Mahdî al-yazdi". Both father and son are renowned: the first is a great mathematician, and only one instrument is known of the second. The engravers, also father and son, came from the same town of Yazd. Muḥammad Mahdī al-Yazdī is considered to be one of the greatest makers in Safavid Persia. Diam: 4.3 in. The throne is reweld, a little part of its side is missing; the ring and the screw are a later addition.
