CHAUSSON ERNEST (1855-1899)
L.A.S. "Ernest Chausson", 22 Bould de Courcelles Friday evening [May 5, 1899], to André-Ferdinand HÉROLD; 2 pages petit in-4 at his address (one border leg. burnished). Reply to the mailing of Savitri, a heroic comedy in two acts, in verse. He read his book with great pleasure. "I don't have the Mahabharata episode in my mind enough to judge how much you have drawn from it. It doesn't matter. Your work is neither ancient nor modern, since it is based on eternal feelings.... The way in which you make the whole of nature participate in Savitri's pain through the scenes in the Forest is quite charming. And this is what takes away any idea of a connection with Alcestis. It's extremely musical. Perhaps, one day, I will ask you to go and talk about Savitri with you, if you would like to...".
