MARGUERITE DE FRANCE, duchesse de SAVOIE (1523- 1574) fille de François Ier, épouse d'Emmanuel-Philibert, duc de Savoie
L.S. "Vostre bonne maistresse Marguerite de France", Turin 2 November 1571, to Pierre FORGET; 1 page in-fol. (a little bit of a fringed edge). Interesting letter on the negotiations of the marriage of Marguerite de Valois (Margot), daughter of Catherine de Medicis, with the future Prince of Navarre Henri IV, in order to reconcile Catholics and Protestants [the marriage took place in August 1572]. She is pleased that Forget finds relief from his ailment at the waters of Bagnières, and that he has seen the Queen of Navarre [JEANNE D'ALBRET], who wrote him "the most honourable letters in the world"; she will answer him "as the Royal mother [CATHERINE DE MEDICIS] has rejoiced with the marriage of her daughter [MARGUERITE DE VALOIS] and the Prince of Navarre [future HENRI IV], of whom she is so happy and content that I can see what greater desire there is than to have a happy end". But she fears "that the King of Navarre, faced with some difficulty on the sermonnyes of the espousals, may have to show her again from me that she should not stop at all, for this would be a great misfortune, that for little thing such a good and sound enterprise is undertaken imperfectly, and that she considers the good and the rest that this marriage will bring her and all those of her intelligence and by conceiving of all France, and that the Pope and all those who are contrary to her would not wish for anything else but difficulties, so that this marriage will not succeed. You know Forget that thisulx of the relligion allowed the late Cardinal de Chastillon to continue to wear the red cap. For a greater reason it seems to me that in order to achieve such a great good which is almost common to all, that they should not have to do the difficulties they could do for the work of a particular person. I beg you to say all this on my behalf to the King of Navarre [...] I commend this matter to you, which is as important as you may think...".
