1972 FIAT DINO Spider 2400
In same ownership since 2001 Original French car Restored in 2011 Chassis no. 135 BS 001542 French registration papers I n the mid-1960s, Ferrari needed a 2-litre production engine for the new Formula 2 and therefore designed the mid-engined Dino in order to have such an engine at its disposal. Faced with the huge task of building 500 examples within a year for it to be homologated, Ferrari turned to Fiat for help, and the agreement between them led to Ferrari building the quad-cam V6 Dino and to an unexpected new model for Fiat. Unveiled at the Turin Show in 1966 as a spider with bodywork by Pininfarina, the Fiat Dino received the 160bhp 2-litre engine conventionally mounted at the front. It was notable for being the first Fiat to have an engine with four overhead cams and a limited-slip differential as standard. In 1969, the capacity of the V6 was increased to 2418cc, while a ZF gearbox was fitted, together with independent rear suspension with trailing arms from the Fiat 130. A few minor changes were made to the styling. Certainly one of the most elegant means of transport for four passengers, the Fiat Dino could accelerate from 0-100kph (62mph) in just 8 seconds and reach a top speed of 130mph, to the accompaniment of the thrilling sound of a Ferrari. The Fiat Dino Spider presented here is one of the 425 cars built and equipped with the 2400cc engine. Produced at the end of 1971, it was sold new in 1972 by Fiat’s importer in France. Purchased in April 2001 by its current owner, this Dino Spider is presented in attractive overall condition. A collector for nearly 30 years, the Fiat’s owner took care to have it maintained by the top specialists, and for some ten years it was initially looked after by Philippe Gardette. In 2011, the owner had a complete restoration of the bodywork carried out. A new alpaca hood was also fitted, while the original black leather upholstery was retained. Altogether nearly 10,000€ was spent
