It was under the teaching of Juan José Sicre, a former pupil of Antoine Bourdelle and official painter of the regime, that he was introduced to sculpture. Very quickly, he aspired to more than the classical teaching he received, he sought to create a sensual sculpture, made of roundness and precise details. A sculpture in which his Latin-American and African origins can be revealed. In 1955, he definitively marked his break with the academism of Cuban institutions by settling in France. The works we are presenting to you today are beautiful examples of the essence of Cardenas' artistic production. Created in the 1950s, these two volumes bear witness to all the symbolic force of the artist's production. We find here the key elements of his formal grammar; a skillful economy of means, an abstraction to the essence of the subject, supple and rounded figures but also a sensitive representation of movement. The mosaics are the distinctive feature of these works. In fact, they are the only two pieces of Cardenas' artistic production created in mosaics, making them entirely unique.
