PROVENANCE Collection particulière, France ANDRÉ LHOTE Gypsy’s Bar, 19 Gypsy's bar, an elegant and vibrant watercolour by André Lhote, belongs to a series of studies for La danse au bar, a monumental canvas exhibited at the artist's major retrospective held at the Musée national d'art moderne in Paris in 1958. The artist began the series before the Great War, with a study exhibited in the spring of 1914 at the Vildrac Gallery. A watercolour from 1917 is still imbued with a very synthetic cubist style, while this one from 1918 announces the lively and colourful character of the final work. With Gypsy's bar, Lhote stands out from his cubist colleagues. Fascinated by the frenzy of modern life, he painted the team sports in vogue at the time (the Rugby series), and coffee and dance scenes. He likes to capture the crucial movement in the live show. As a worthy theorist and member of the group la Section d'Or, the artist's prowess lies in his mastery of ordered and rhythmic composition. A self-taught painter, Lhote is nevertheless endowed with a solid artistic culture. He takes up the techniques of classical compositions. The curtains of the hall frame the stage. The customers seated from behind and in profile and the musicians seated three-quarters of the way to the right in the foreground serve as repulsive figures, inviting the spectator to enter the bar and take their place among the guests. The highlight of the composition is the woman dressed all in white at the back of the room, wearing a broad smile, who seems to appear on the stage like a Pierrot de Watteau. The poses of the customers and the dancers are reminiscent
