PROVENANCE Collection privée (acquis auprès de l'artiste en 1924) Maxwell Gallery LTD, San Francisco Vente Appay - Gairoard - Besch, Cannes, août 1990 Collection particulière, Paris EMILE OTHON FRIEZ  Othon Friesz, born in February 1879, is an important French artist of the Fauve period. He studied at the Ecole municipale des beaux-arts du Havre, then at the Ecole des beaux-arts de Paris. In 1905, he exhibited some of his canvases at the Salon d'Automne and began at this time to use stronger colours and wider brushstrokes. Paysage à Toulon and Le Faron, les collines, both painted in 1924, are very representative of Othon Friesz's work. His painting is very marked, nourished by Fauvism and Cubism but also by Impressionism.  He was inspired by the simplification of forms, the saturation of the palette and above all the painting on the motif. The very theme of the nature that surrounds him. By mixing these inspirations and retaining only what interests him, Othon Friesz creates a real "type" of landscape mixing dream and naturalism.
