VU CAO DAM (1908-2000)
Chevaux au galop, circa 1945-1949 Encre et couleurs sur soie, signée en bas à droite 60.4 x 50 cm - 23 3/4 x 19 2/3 in. Ink and color on silk, signed lower right PROVENANCE Collection privée, France (offert par l'artiste et conservé depuis) Puis par descendance, Paris. Evoking prestige, talent, success but also strength and vitality, the horse is an important symbol and particularly dear to Asian culture. Inseparable from military victories, his agility but also his ardour makes him an ally of choice. Traditionally, the stallion evokes power and privilege. Animal particularly represented in the Far Eastern culture, his aura is found in Chinese astrology where the horse is a strong sign with a very positive image. Made during his Parisian stay, Chevaux au galop is a remarkable tribute to this noble animal. If Vu Cao Dam detached himself from sculpture to devote himself more to painting, his initial talent is materialized through the movement that emanates from the composition. The dynamism and fervor of the horses are embodied in the great flat tints of color. Of a master talent, the artist manages to take again the codes of the Western painting while emphasizing the elements of his native culture. Thus, if he adopts a classical construction where the characters are in the foreground and the scenery in the background, he uses a medium as well as a subject characteristic of the Sino-Vietnamese culture. This highly mastered crossbreeding is found in the detail of the horses: one white, the other black, one domesticated, the other wild. A Vietnamese artist imbued with French culture, Vu Cao Dam embodies, like the horse, freedom of spirit.
