GASPAR PEETER VERBRUGGEN
Still-life of a vase with flowers Oil on canvas, signed lower left gas. p. verbruggen. 86,5 x 70,2 cm Still-life with flowers Oil on canvas, signed lower left 34 1/16 x 27 5/9 in. Born in Antwerp in 1635, Verbruggen the Elder is the son of a gardener from whom, no doubt, he got his love of flowers, which he tirelessly represented throughout his life. He was received into the Guild of Saint Luke as a pupil of Cornelis Mahu (1613 -1689). Verbruggen is a master in the art of flower representation and is fully in keeping with the Flemish tradition of the genre, which experienced a real golden age in the 17th century. His talent is marvellously illustrated in our painting where a bouquet and a spray overflow from a basin and an entablature. With no concern for accuracy as to the different flowering periods of the varieties he represents, the painter meticulously appropriates the colours, shapes and textures specific to each flower. Tulip, rose, carnation, hydrangea, narcissus, hibiscus? Verbruggen depicts with refinement a flora that he has observed since childhood, sprinkling it here and there with water droplets, a discreet exercise attesting to his mastery of the genre.
