Virgin and Child Virgin and Child Painting on silk, 72 x 59 cm Virgin and Child Painting on silk, 28.3 x 23.2 in. COLLECTION ENRIQUE FREYMANN 1888 -1954 A man in search of knowledge, eager to learn and share, Enrique Freymann took over the reins of the Hermann publishing house, founded in 1876 by Arthur Hermann and passed on to his son Arthur, our collector's father-in-law. Continuing the editorial line of the company, which is keen to transmit mathematical and scientific knowledge, Freymann launched a new collection with the support of Louis de Broglie (1892 -1987), future Nobel Prize winner in Physics in 1929, "Actualités scientifiques et industrielles". Among the great names that have passed through Editions Hermann are the group of mathematicians Nicolas Bourbaki, the theses of Jean Cavaillès (1903 -1944), philosopher, epistemologist and great name of the Resistance, but also Gaston Bachelard (1884-1962), philosopher and poet, and Jean- Paul Sartre (1905 -1980). From Enrique Freymann, François Le Lionnais (1901 -1984), founder of the Oulipo and friend of Broglie, tells that he was "A man after my own heart (...) Of Jewish origin, of Mexican nationality, Freymann began his career as a cultural attaché in Mexico. There he met Diego Rivera (1886-1957), who was to play a major role in the scholarly encounters that the future collector would later make, introducing him very early on to Albert Einstein (1879-1955) and Paul Langevin (1872-1946). It was certainly in Mexico that Enrique built up a body of work, part of which is revealed today in our sale of Old Paintings. A heterogeneous collection, the works acquired by Freymann are a rare ensemble on the current French art market, where only occasionally appear Latin American works or works by European artists who have returned from
