CLAUDIO RIDOLFI
Virgin and Child Oil on canvas 72,5 x 48,5 cm Virgin and Child Oil on canvas, 28,5 x 19 in. Claudie Ridolfi trained in the art of painting with Paolo Veronese XX in Venice and Federico Barrocci in Urbino. He painted many religious works for the churches in the Marche region where he lived. The striking Venetian colouring in the pinks and blues, and the draped and voluminous representation of the clothes of which Barrocci was the master, make this Madonna and Child a magnificent work, synthesizing the various schools and influences from which Ridolfi was confronted and from which he was able to draw the essence. Contemporary of the Carracci and the Bolognese school of which they were the instigators, Ridolfi reached in his art a form of classicism, which departs from the mannerism of the previous generation of Italian painters. The stability of the Virgin, enhanced by the crushed foot on the ground, by the symmetry of the legs and arms surrounding Christ, accentuates the maternal and benevolent, but also powerful feeling she conveys. Remembering the art of masters such as Michelangelo and especially Raphael, Ridolfi rediscovered the serenity of the pose, the pure beauty of the features, the curvature of the drapes and the brightness of the colours that make this painting an important work in the artist's career. We thank Dr. Anna Maria Ambrosini Massari for confirming the attribution to Claudio Ridolfi.
