RARE HANGING in chased and gilded bronze, ivory and white ma - Lot 153
RARE HANGING in chased and gilded bronze, ivory and white marble; the circular dial, with radiating channels centred on a turbined rose, rests on a bollard containing a finely carved ivory plaque decorated with a medallion representing a horseman knocking down an enemy; it is flanked by two winged terms with sticks; base with projection and bas-relief with griffins; quadrangular base. The back repeating the decoration of the front panel has a gate revealing the movement signed "Chelsea Clock Co. Boston USA". Circa 1900 H. 43; W. 19.5; 13.5 cm The United States of the late 19th century is full of paradoxes. Turned towards the future, certain of a prophetic world destiny, the elites remain attached to the European stylistic codes. The New York Tribune Building, ancestor of the skyscrapers, was next to the mansions on Fifth Avenue, a veritable apotheosis of eclecticism that alternately draws from the Gothic repertoire, such as the Cornelius Vanderbilt II Mansion or the French rocaille taste in the William A. Clark Mansion. True museums of European glory, many were destroyed to make way for the high towers of Manhattan. Survivor, the Frick collection is a precious witness of this era where original pieces from European collections and pastiches rub shoulders. The clock presented here borrows rather from the Renaissance and testifies to the taste of the American elite, which is still influenced by Europe. Here, the sphinxes echo the skill of the carpenters of the two-body cabinets of the French Renaissance. This neo-Renaissance repertoire is enriched by the ivory bas-relief decorated with a general striking down an enemy in the taste of the bas-reliefs of the Dacian Wars of the Trajan column.
