LARGE rectangular BOX inlaid with foliage,... - Lot 45 - Aguttes
LARGE rectangular BOX inlaid with foliage, flowers and birds, enhanced with green-tinted tortoiseshell. The lid is centered and at the corners, interlaced initials supporting an arrowhead, topped with a marquis' crown. It is encircled with chased bronze rods gilded with eggs. 17th century H. 11,5 ; L. 53,5 ; D. 42,5 cm Restorations, cracks on the upper part and veneer jumps By the finesse of its decoration and its inlays of native wood and green-stained ivory, this chest is close to the work of Pierre Gole. Originally from the United Provinces, the young carpenter-cabinet maker quickly perceived the dynamics of Paris, then the largest city in Europe. On his arrival, he begins an apprenticeship with a carpenter, Adriaan Garbrandt. Spotted for his virtuosity, particularly in the variety of materials used in his marquetry, he was appointed "master ebony carpenter of the king" in 1656. From 1681, he had a workshop in Les Gobelins, from where he spread his style to young cabinetmakers. Among them André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732) who was particularly influenced by his work, his virtuosity in handling pewter and brass marquetry, such as the Mazarin desk attributed to Pierre Gole, kept in the Museum of Fine Art in Chartres. Among the caskets on sale and attributed to Pierre Gole are the following: - Sotheby's Amsterdam, 21 November 2007, lot 10 - Christie's Paris, the Steinitz II taste, 14 November 2007, lot 135 - Artcurial, 15 December 2010, lot 6
