EXPOSITION 1941, Vichy, Galerie Lorenceau

Since the seventeenth century, the portrait genre is one of the noblest. Ensuring its sponsor a showcase, it has evolved over the centuries, allowing artists to express their creativity as well as their talent. Mai Trung Thu, an essential artist of the first class of the Hanoi School of Fine Arts, excels in this pictorial genre. “L'éventail”, is a striking example. The western framing evokes the art of classical portraiture. The model is in the center, in a refined background. Thanks to this choice in the composition, nothing distracts the attention of this young woman. In the manner of the greatest portraitists, Mai Trung Thu adds an attribute: the fan. As the only decorative element, it reinforces the idea of delicacy emanating from the work thanks to a subtle play of transparency. The very fine line underlines the softness of this face with melancholy eyes. The very soft palette is skillfully enhanced by a touch of yellow to enhance the traditional outfit of this young woman. Taking up the western codes of the portrait, Mai Trung Thu manages to lay on silk a young Vietnamese woman embodying an ideal of beauty.
