If feminine beauty has always inspired artists, Mai Trung Thu is a favorite subject. Using a composition devoid of artifice and a sober palette, the artist pays homage to femininity while celebrating the natural beauty of the model. Through the wide, smooth strokes allowed by this technique of painting on silk, he underlines the softness of the character. The very fine black border contributes to the delicacy of the composition. Moreover, the charm of this work is reinforced by the movement that reigns there. An impression of roundness is rendered thanks to the dif­ferent undulations of the model echoing the movement of the veil. Spherical mountains with swirling herbs completes the decora­tion. The strength of the young woman's gaze highlights this agitated atmosphere. While celebrating feminine beauty in its sim­plicity, Mai Trung Thu shows his admiration for women, imperturbable and calm in the midst of the storm.

Born in 1906 near Haiphong, Mai Trung Thu attended the French high-school in Hanoi. Like Le Pho, Vu Cao Dam and Le Van De, he was in the first year of students at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts d'Indochine, founded and directed by the painter Victor Tardieu. Invited to take part in the 1931 Paris Colonial Exhibition, Mai Thu discovered and fell in love with France, where he settled in 1937 and stayed until he died.
