RAVEL Maurice (1875-1937)
L.A.S. "Maurice Ravel", "Sur le Rhin, vers Dusseldorf" July 5, 1905, to Maurice DELAGE; 6 pages in-8, header and vignette of the Yacht Aimée, envelope. Very beautiful letter during his cruise on the yacht l'Aimée of Alfred and Misia Edwards, with Cipa and Ida Godebski, Pierre Bonnard and Pierre Laprade. Since yesterday, they are on the German Rhine. "This is not, to a great extent, the Rhine that I imagined, tragic and legendary, for want of Nixes, gnomes and Walküres, populated by burgs on spiky rocks, in the middle of fir trees. Hugo, Wagner, Gustave Doré. [...] What I saw yesterday will be traced in the corner of the eye, together with the port of Antwerp. After a muddy day, on a very wide river between desperately flat, characterless banks, one discovers a city of chimneys, domes spitting out flames and red or blue smoke. This is Alsum [Walsum], a gigantic foundry where 24,000 workers work night and day. Since Rerorth [Ruhrort] is too far away, we'll stop here. That's a good thing, because we wouldn't have seen this amazing sight. We went down to the factories at dusk. How can I tell you the impression of those cast-iron castles, those incandescent cathedrals, the wonderful symphony of the belts, the whistles, the formidable hammer blows that envelop you. Everywhere, a red, dark and fiery sky. There, a thunderstorm broke out. We came home horribly saucy, in various arrangements. Ida was terrified and wanted to cry. Me too, but with joy. How musical it all is ! So I intend to use it. We left this morning, in rainy weather. A very pale sun, very high. At every moment, blue masses are revealed through the yellow fog. And then you can see them as great palaces of enchantment. It's always the monumental factories that cover the whole region. Now the landscape becomes more peaceful. The banks are flat again with small forests from time to time. We plan to sleep tonight in Düsseldorf"...
