OFFENBACH JACQUES (1819-1880)
P.A.S. MUSICAL "Jacques Offenbach", Chanson de Fortunio, 1865; 1 page in-4. Album page. 5 measures, song and lyrics, from the famous Chanson de Fortunio: "If you think I am going to say who I dare to love". Offenbach had composed this song in June 1850 for a revival at the Comédie- Française of Alfred de MUSSET's play Le Chandelier; it was published by Heugel in 1853. In 1861, Ludovic Halévy and Hector Crémieux conceived, based on Musset's play, a one-act comic opera libretto for Offenbach, built around the famous song. La Chanson de Fortunio was premiered at the Bouffes-Parisiens on January 5, 1861. This album page is dated by Offenbach, under his great signature: "Wien den 13ten März 1865". At the bottom of the page, the librettist Ludovic HALÉVY wrote: "For legalization of the signature of Mr Offenbach Ludovic Halévy Paris 19 April 1870".
