MASSENET Jules (1842-1912)
MUSICAL MANUSCRIPT autograph signed "J. Massenet", The Hague February 1888; 1 page oblong in-4. Nice album page from Manon. Excerpt from Act I of Manon, at the meeting of Des Grieux with Manon: 8 bars for piano, Andante cantabile, on 10-line paper, with the spoken words of Des Grieux on the musical accompaniment: "Mademoiselle... - Eh what?... - Pardon me! I don't know what... I obey... I no longer follow my master... I see you, I'm sure... for the first time. And my heart however has just recognized you!..." The page is dedicated: "To Prince Caradja Pasha" [Jean Constantin Karadja Pasha (1835-1894), Romanian diplomat], "in memory of the 1st performance of Manon, French Royal Theatre in The Hague, debut in the theatre in the role of Manon by Sibyl Sanderson (a true artist!)" (the name of the singer Sibyl Sanderson is not written by Massenet, but signed by her).
