L.A.S. "J. Br." with MUSIC, [Wieden 11 October 1887], to Kapellmeister Julius von BERNUTH in Hamburg; 1 page in-12, address on reverse (Karten-Brief; small slit in the fold). Curious letter with a musical quotation from Mozart. [Julius von BERNUTH (1830-1902) was director of the Hamburg Philharmonic (where he had been appointed in 1862 preferably to Brahms) and of the Hamburg Conservatory]. Brahms begins with three bars of music from scene 3 of Act I of Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), corresponding to Tamino's words "So ist denn alles Heuchelei" (All this is hypocrisy), and then writes: "und ich pries den Sommer die fr[eun] dl[iche] Güte, mit der Du schriebst: Schweigen bedeute "Nein". Kann man runder und vollkommener schweigen als ich? Auch m. Bedauern darüber verschwieg ich, das ich denn jetzt aber ausdrücklich daher setze! - Wien ist sehr gut und und hübsch aber gar weit, das hat sehr oft zu klagen"... He spent the summer praising the kindness with which Bernuth wrote: silence means "no". Is it possible to be silent more smoothly and more perfectly than him? He also hid his regrets about this, which he now explicitly presents! Vienna is very nice and pretty, but from a distance, because there is much to complain about ...
