Maurice UTRILLO (1883-1955)
L'Eglise Saint-Marguerite à Paris Oil on canvas, signed lower right 46 x 38 cm - 18 1/8 x 15 in. Le certificat rédigé en juin 2020 par l'Association Maurice Utrillo sera remis à l'acquéreur. PROVENANCE Collection privée, Paris Maurice Utrillo depicts the church of Sainte-Marguerite in the 11th arrondissement of Paris. The artist brilliantly represents the tranquility and gentleness of this early autumn day. The whiteness of the walls contrasts sharply with the bright colors of the tree's foliage. Precise touches of black encircle the masses of color, structuring and intensifying the composition. The artist reduces the depth by densely applying the paint to the sky. The colors of reality and figuration that are dear to Utrillo's heart stand in contrast to the avant-garde movements developing in parallel at the same time. Only the naive and simple representation of reality interests him. The painter obsessively reproduces every nook and cranny of Paris, from which he draws his inspiration. However, Utrillo absorbs and reinterprets these cityscapes in his own way. The artist can be described as a true Baudelaire-style ‘Flâneur' : he walks around and blends into the decor. He observes and comments in his own way on the modern urban Parisian world.
