A body of water borders this road, on which the silhouettes of the trees are reflected. Here, Utrillo moves away from the city to depict the countryside. A sense of tran­quility emerges from this composition. The perspective given to the road gives an impression of immense depth to the canvas. The painter depicts this country­side scene in life, and seems to represent in a few brushstrokes what this landscape evokes for him. MAURICE UTRILLO Son of the famous artist and model Suzanne Valadon and an unknown father, Maurice Utrillo was born in 1883 at the foot of the Butte de Montmartre. The Spanish painter Miquel Utrillo, the lover of the artist's mother, recognized him and gave him his name. However, the name disappeared from the life of the young Maurice Utrillo. The child is then entrusted, despite his very young age, to his grandmother who lives north of Paris. An unstable personality, Utrillo fell into alcoholism and depression at an early age. He suffers fits of madness and nervous breakdowns, which lead him to suicide attempts. This pathology profoundly affects his studies. He stays several times in a psychiatric asylum. It was on his return from one of these hospital stays that his mother decided to introduce him to painting to help him channel his passions. Utrillo was already introduced to the world of art at a very young age: his mother frequented Parisian bohemian circles.
