PROVENANCE Acheté au début du XXe siècle par monsieur Louis Bernard, ami de Caillebotte, collectionneur et amateur d'art Puis par descendance au propriétaire actuel, collection privée, Paris EXPOSITION Galerie Paul Ambroise, vers 1975/1976, Paris AUGUSTE RENOIR Auguste Renoir was certainly one of the most recognised and celebrated French painters of the late 19th/early 20th centuries. Born in Limoges in 1841 to artisan parents, he began studying porcelain painting when he was thirteen. After his family moved to Paris, he would copy pictures assiduously at the Louvre, including those of Rubens, Watteau and Fragonard. In 1862 he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Gleyre, where he met Monet, Sisley and Bazille. With Pissarro, they soon introduced him to contemporary masters like Courbet, Manet and Narcisse Diaz. These figures had a powerful influence on Renoir's development. The artist exhibited from time to time at the Salon, and the first significant support he received came from the independent art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel and the highly enlightened critic Théodore Duret. In 1874, the glorious adventure of Impressionism was launched with the group's exhibition in Nadar's studio. In the 1880s, Renoir travelled to Algeria and then Italy, where he discovered the great Renaissance masterpieces. These inspired him to develop a very personal style half-way between contemporary modernism and classical tradition. The small painting on offer today is a perfect illustration of Renoir's world and pictorial technique. It is a fragment from a larger painting. The «sample» features the art
