Gustave LOISEAU (1865-1935)
Le port de Pornic, effet de pluie, 1900 Oil on canvas, signed lower left 54 x 65 cm - 21 ¼ x 25 ½ in. L'attestation C919-A133, rédigée en date du 24 novembre 2018 par Didier Imbert et indiquant l'insertion au catalogue raisonné en préparation, sera remise à l'acquéreur PROVENANCE Vente De Corneillan, 22 mars 1992 Collection privée, Ile-de-France The work we are presenting shows the port of Pornic, where he moved in 1900, and thus belongs to the last phase in Loiseau's career. We see the bottom of the harbour at low tide in the rain. While many paintings of Pornic have a lyrical feel to them, because they depict a more touristic or high-society side of the town, here what interests the painter is its trading side. There is a pendant to this painting (cf oeuvre en rapport), where the port is shown at high tide, with the same boat at anchorage. We see the quay in its usual state of intense commotion. The boats are unloading sacks of grain in front of the wooden building in the foreground, belonging to the mill behind it, where the cereals are turned into flour. The ships will then leave loaded with a new cargo, prior to sailing along the coast. Pornic was a favourite spot for artists in the early 20th century: Renoir stayed there in 1892, Maurice Denis and Armand Guillaumin in 1903 and 1909 and Maxime Maufra in 1987. Apart from Maurice Denis, all of them liked painting from life there.
