André MAIRE (1898 - 1984)
L'ile de la Cité et Notre Dame, 1958 Paravent articulé, 4 panneaux. Oil on panels, signed and dated lower center of the left pannel 170 x 180 cm - 67 x 70 7/8 in. ANDRÉ MAIRE  Born in Paris in 1898, André Maire was soon encouraged by his father to pursue an artistic path. Indeed, his father enrolled him from an early age at the drawing school in the Place des Vosges. It was during this period that André Maire met the man who would become a true mentor for him throughout his life, the painter and poet Emile Bernard. After drawing school, he continued his artistic training at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris and joined André Devambez's studio. He then returned to the ‘Académie de la Grande-Chaumière', known for having opened the way to independent art and appreciated for its pure creative spirit. When the First World War broke out, he was mobilized. Advised by Emile Bernard, he finished his service in the colonial infantry. This experience creates in him a need to travel that will never leave him. He travels the world between Indochina, Italy, especially Venice where he marries his mentor's daughter, but also Africa. In 1946, he won the ‘Grand Prix de l'Afrique Occidental Française'. His most memorable journey will most certainly be Asia, where he will stay for almost ten years. Appointed professor of drawing and modelling at the Hanoi School of Architecture, he discovered Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. He decides to return to France at the end of the 1950s, where he will remain, except for a last trip to Madagascar and Martinique, until the end of his life. The exceptional screen that we present in this sale reveals a beautiful synthesis of the artist's work. Made just after his return from Asia, we can find influences from his journey mixed with a real testimony of his French identity. Indeed, the folding screen, an object originating from China, is characteristic of Asian culture. It
