LALIQUE
RING " THE KISS ". Two profiles kissing, one in relief, the other in intaglio. Pressed glass, enameled thistle decoration and 18K (750) gold. Signed, circa 1900-1905. Pb.: 6.35 gr - Td.: 51 A glass and gold ring. The kiss is a recurring theme in Lalique's work. Particularly personal, the first known piece inspired by it is the brooch "the kiss" which is in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. Around 1880, Lalique, barely 20 years old, stayed in London. He fell in love with a young woman and created this brooch to express his sadness when he had to leave her to return to Paris. RENÉ LALIQUE In 1900, Lalique was 40 years old. His triumph at the Universal Exhibition in Paris testifies to the extent of his genius. Irreversibly, with him, the jewel has become a true art object. At the height of his career and while he was becoming increasingly successful with his extraordinary and unusual ornaments, glass appeared in his work, taking a growing place in the early years of the 20th century. This glass, which was brought to its aesthetic peak by Art Nouveau, became the emblem of progress, modernity and a symbol of transition between two eras. Lalique was fascinated by this material and, as early as 1890, sought to bring into his creations an additional modelling and source of light, without having to resort to expensive precious stones. Glass offered him the opportunity to do so, and thus opened the way to larger-scale production. Lalique will become a glassmaker exclusively, abandoning his original art. BIJ2021
