WILLIAM BOUGUEREAU (LA ROCHELLE, 1825 - 1905)
Face of an angel Oil on canvas 35.3 x 27.5 cm Annotated lower left "sketch by W. Bouguereau from his studio" This late study, probably dating from 1900-1902, is preparatory to the Virgin with Angels (Regina angelorum) presented at the Paris Universal Exhibition, 1900, no. 239 (today at the Musée du Petit Palais, Paris) or at Les Oréades, presented Salon de 1902, no. 207 (today at the Musée d'Orsay, Paris). This head would not have been used in the exact position in which it appears here, but its half-closed eyes, half-open lips and crystalline complexion enhanced by the hair of a flamboyant redhead are typical of the nymphs painted by Bouguereau.
