ATTRIBUÉ À THÉODULE RIBOT (SAINT-NICOLAS-D'ATTEZ, 1823 - COLOMBES, 1891)
Portrait of an old woman Oil on canvas Signed "t. Ribot" lower left 73 x 59 cm Provenance Collection of the Springfield Museum of Fine Arts, Massachusetts This portrait can be compared to the Portrait of an Old Woman, sometimes entitled La Mère Morieu, described by Castagnary at the 1878 Salon as follows: "La Mère Morieu presents from the front her face modelled in the light with surprising vigour and precision. If I had to choose ..., I would probably take this one ...". (1) There are two versions of this painting mentioned in the catalogue of the 1890 Théodule Ribot exhibition at Bernheim: one, exhibited at the Salon, belonged to Edmond Turquet, and the other was bought by Hubert Debrousse (sold in 1900, whose catalogue gives the dimensions 72 x 59 cm, very similar to ours). Only one of the two versions is exhibited, under number 171, and measures 73 x 60 cm. The only difference with the previous one is that the model wears a "white and blue cotton cap". This last version, whose location is unknown, remains to be found. (1) : Castagnary, Salons (1857-70) sic, Tome second, Paris, Charpentier, 1892, p.339.
