FRANÇOIS HYPPOLITE DEBON (PARIS, 1816-1872)
Henry VIII instituting the Anglican Church before the Pope Oil on canvas 138.5 x 195.7 cm Titled and signed "H. Debon" on the back François Hippolyte Debon, admitted in 1825 to the School of Fine Arts, was a pupil of Gros and Abel de Pujol. He exhibited regularly at the Salon de peinture et sculpture from 1835 to 1868, showing his talents as a history painter. He aroused the enthusiasm of Baudelaire, who wrote in his Critique du Salon of 1846: "In this interminable Salon, where more than ever the differences are erased, where everyone draws and paints a little, but not enough to deserve even to be classified, - it is a great joy to meet a frank and true painter, like M. Debon [...]. It is beautiful and healthy painting, and indicates in the author a man who is perfectly sure of himself. »
