ATTRIBUÉ À DANIEL CHODOWIECKI (GDANSK, 1726 - BERLIN, 1801)
La Danse La Partie de cartes Original oil on canvas Pair; 41 x 34.5 cm each These subjects are based on compositions by Nicolas Lancret, L'Automne (1721-23) and Les Plaisirs de l'hiver (1719-21). Chodowiecki, a German painter of Polish origin, became known for his paintings and numerous engravings depicting the bourgeois life of the 18th century, in the comfort of interiors and in the leisure activities of the countryside. He was often inspired by French art, between rococo and classicism, and by the compositions of Pater or Lancret, who took the leisure activities of the wealthy classes as his subject. He became director of the Berlin Academy of Arts in 1797.
