ÉCOLE FLAMANDE DU XVIIE SIECLE, ATELIER DE PIERRE-PAUL RUBENS (SIEGEN, 1577 - ANVERS, 1640)
Presumed portrait of Hélène Fourment sitting in profile Oak panel, one plank, not parquet flooring 24,5 x 19 cm Mark of Guilliam Gabron on the back Provenance - Sale Maitre Foucault greffier at 8 de la rue Maria in Argenteuil (circa 1898) - Private collection, France Bibliography: J. VAN DAMME "De Antwerpse Tafereelmakers en hum merken - Identificatie en betekenis", in Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen, Jaarboek, 1990, page 193-236 This oil on panel was probably made around 1630, at the time of Rubens' marriage with Hélène Fourment. The date is corroborated by the panel mark used. On the back is the mark of Guilliam Gabron, a panel maker in Antwerp, between 1609 and 1662. Gabron modified his mark between 1616-1617 and 1626 to adopt the flower surrounded by two Gs on our panel. Among the 33 panels bearing this mark listed in 1990, most were by Rubens, Van Dyck, Frans I and II and Ambrosius I Francken, Van Oost, David Teniers, Cornelis de Vos. A painting of the workshop of Rubens, Thetis receives from Vulcan the weapons for Achilles bearing the mark of Gabron passed under lot 55 in the sale of 05/05/2017 at Galartis.
