ÉCOLE FRANÇAISE DU XVIIE SIÈCLE, D'APRÈS BERNARDINO LUINI (DUMENZA, 1482 - MILAN, 1532)
Head of Saint John the Baptist Oil on panel 23.2 x 14.9 cm This small study focuses on the decapitated head of Saint John the Baptist, brought to Salome on a tray, as imagined by Bernardino Luini, in his masterpiece which belonged to the collection of Louis XIV and is now in the Louvre museum. The artist, who was inspired by the great Lombard master, noticed that all the emotional intensity of the painting was to be found in this half-closed-eyed face, so characteristic of Luini's characters, and whose pale colour, gaunt features and lowered eyes convey a feeling of great pain and sadness, as opposed to Salome's satisfied expression. It is, however, the face of St. John the Baptist that faces the viewer, in all the horror it provokes, and not that of the person who commissioned the action.
