ECOLE DE SIENNE DU XIVE SIÈCLE
Saint Barbara Tempera and gold on wood 49 x 25 cm At the end of the 12th century, Siena becomes a place of artistic creation of great importance. Under the tutelage of Duccio, Lorenzetti and Simone Martini among others develop a style of altarpieces which, like the Maestà, are treasures of Western art. Most of these altarpieces are composed of large panels representing the Virgin and Child. Embedded in woodwork, holy martyrs and doctors of the Church frame this fundamental figure of Christianity. The small panel we present here is certainly from one of these large compositions made in the Siena area at the beginning of the 14th century. Drouot online
