With this painting, the artist draws a very solemn family portrait. The grandparents are seated in the centre on two chairs, the parents stand behind them, delicately placing one hand on their chairs. The composition of the painting is interesting because of the position of all the family members who are installed symmetrically, and who are finally brought together by the girl in the centre. The grandfather strokes his beard, and this gesture gives the figure a certain wisdom. The two little boys cling to the female figures in the work, thus emphasizing the strength of the filial bond. One of the two young women holds an unfolded fan in her hand. Three generations are thus reunited and the colours of the palette, very bright and warm, give a joyful tone to this composition.

HỨ Mai Trung Thu, known as Mai Thu, was born in 1906. He comes from a large family, his father, Mai Trung Cat was governor of Bac Ninh and was granted the title of baron by the French government. He studied at the French high school in Hanoi. In 1925, Mai Thu entered the first class of the Indochina School of Fine Arts, directed by Victor Tardieu. It is during his years of study that he becomes interested in painting illustrating scenes of Vietnamese rural life. He chose to paint them on silk, an expensive material that is as delicate as the palette of colours he uses.
Mai Trung Thứ, được biết biết đến với cái tên Mai Thứ, là một họa sĩ người Việt sinh năm 1906. Ông xuất thân từ một gia đình lớn, cha của ông, Mai Trung Cát là tổng đốc Bắc Ninh và được chính phủ Pháp trao tặng danh hiệu nam tước . Ông học tại trường trung học của Pháp ở Hà Nội . Năm 1925, Mai Thứ gia nhập lớp đầu tiên của Trường Mỹ Đông Dương, do Victor Tardieu làm giám đốc. Chính trong những năm học này, ông quan tâm đến các tranh minh họa cảnh đời sống nông thôn Việt Nam. Ông sẽ chọn vẽ các cảnh này trên lụa, một chất liệu tiền và tinh tế như bảng màu ông sử dụng.
