SCHMIED François-Louis (1873-1941)
Le Cantique des Cantiques, translation by Ernest RENAN. Paris, F.-L. Schmied, 1925. In-8, red-brown morocco, embedded in the first dish, lacquer on ivory representing flowers and various plants surmounted by a flight of birds, in a vast composition covering both dishes and the back and including large pieces of beige, ochre or mordoré morocco and a piece of natural ivory, all underlined by gilt fillets, inner gilt net, gilt silk lining, untrimmed mordoré paper endpapers, cover, half morocco shirt, interlocking (G. Cretté succ. de Marius Michel rel. - J. Dunand laqueur). One of the major books of the Art Deco period, Schmied's masterpiece. The ornamentation, composition and arrangement of this book are the work of F.-L. Schmied, who also executed the woodcut and printing on his hand presses. Each page of the book is adorned with compositions and lettering, woodcut and printed in colour, gold and silver, in a revolutionary layout that offers an entirely new aesthetic of the Book. Established by F.-L. Schmied on the initiative of a group of enthusiasts, the edition was printed in 110 copies, the first 6 being collaborators' copies and including a double suite of engravings. Copy no. 80, a remarkable, very elaborate binding by Schmied, executed by Georges Cretté and decorated with a superb ivory lacquer by Jean Dunand bearing Schmied's signature. The original model of the binding is added at the end of the volume. It bears on the back this handwritten indication: "plaque d'ivoire à venir au plat". This ivory plate, inlaid in the second cover, acts as a reminder of the one on the first cover; it has not been decorated in any way and is presented as it appears in Schmied's model, adorned with its natural lustre.
