MORAND Paul (1888-1976)
Twenty-five poems without birds, autograph manuscript signed. S.d. [1924], 32 pages in ink on 30 tabbed pages in one volume in folio (freckles). Half black chagrin with corners underlined with cold fillets, spine ribbed, gilt title, gilt head, grey paper covers and azure blue marbled paper endpapers (period binding). Unique manuscript of this modern poetry cycle. The Twenty-five poems without birds appeared in the original edition in the volume of Poèmes (1914-1924), published by Le Sans Pareil in 1924, bringing together the collections Lampes à arc (1919) and Feuilles de température (1920), then these Twenty-five poems without birds, previously unpublished, "ironic and bitter paintings of a universe without birds" (Michel Décaudin). This "unique manuscript," as Morand indicates on the title page, contains 23 poems; two poems that finally took their place in the collection, Un grand bonjour and Progrès de l'automne, are missing, and were probably added to it in extremis, the Bibliographie de la France of November 23, 1923, even announcing "twenty-one unpublished poems. The manuscript is written mainly in black ink, in a clear and almost scratch-free handwriting, on the front of 27 large sheets of lined paper: plus 2 sheets [10-11] of slightly darker paper, including one on the letterhead of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Directorate of Political and Commercial Affairs, drafts in black pencil and purple or black ink, with a large number of erasures and corrections. On the title page, in addition to the mention "Manuscrit unique", Paul Morand noted: "These twenty-five poems appeared in 1924 in the original edition of Le Sans Pareil". Inauguration of a canon (f. 2), signed "PM": "When the table becomes oval/and the glasses change shape, /a Brother Superior, in frac, /has the guests sign the Golden Book [...]"; Inauguration of a liner (f. 3), signed "PMorand": "The artists of the Comédie-Fse/have come on the liner with 4 turbines [..
