MAILLOL ARISTIDE (1861-1944) - LONGUS (IIE OU IIIE SIÈCLE) D'APRÈS
Daphnis and Chloe. Paris, Gonin, 1937. In-8, (3 ff. 2 first blanks), 217 pp., (2 ff.), illustrated cover. Beige morocco, set of curved gilt and black interlacing fillets on the covers and spine, smooth spine, beige morocco frame inside, brown suede linings and endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, preserved cover, shirt with brown morocco overlapping bands and back, case and shirt (Georges Cretté). Beautiful edition realized with the collaboration of Gustave Édouard Gentil, proposing the Pastorales de Longus in the version of Amyot, revised and completed by Paul-Louis Courier. It is illustrated with 48 original woodwinds by Aristide Maillol, including one on the cover and one on the title. The edition was printed in 500 copies on Maillol paper in the titled folder of the edition, plus a few out of print, signed by the artist. One of the off-the-shelf copies came from the collection of Mr. Benoît-Cattin, who had it masterfully bound by Georges Cretté. Perfectly preserved copy. An old engraved portrait of Jacques Amyot and two autograph letters signed by the publisher Philippe Gonin to Mr. Benoît-Cattin about the binding and the suites, dated February 15, 1952 and June 1952.
