MAGRITTE René (1898-1967)
Signed autograph letter addressed to Paul ÉLUARD. Brussels "139 rue Esseyhem", "Vendredi" [1948], 1 page in-4 in ink on paper. Letter to Paul Éluard confirming Magritte's willingness to ask his friends to give a title to his paintings. "My dear Paul, here they are, the few photographs of paintings I told you about. "The Caterpillar and the Butterfly" will soon follow, I hope. But in the meantime, it would be, I think, useful for us and for others, if you would take the trouble to write me a few words about them. It is a habit that I think we should have and that we are able, I hope, to make very good. It is not forbidden to think that it would be a way to pass the time that would be worth a little effort? "The Caterpillar and the Butterfly" as I see it at the moment would be made with a young woman of the same "genre" as the one in "The Provincials". For "Les Provinciales" I had first thought of a different title: "Les Beaux Joueurs" - Then after trying on a collar of black pudding around the neck of the Hercules I thought of calling this painting "Le Folklore" - Perhaps the new painting I will do with the young woman with the black pudding collar should be named with this last title. "The Caterpillar and the Butterfly" explaining too well, that is, wrong. In any case, I wish you to give me the right title for good. I'm very affectionate to you René Magritte". Document of great interest.
