KAFKA FRANZ (1883-1924)
A set of thirty-eight autograph signed letters addressed to Robert KLOPSTOCK and various documents. Circa 1920-1924, various formats, in German, in ink and pencil on paper, in a black binder with the beginning of a letter from Kafka printed on it. 38 autograph letters and postcards in German, most of them signed "K", and addressed to Robert Klopstock, doctor and Kafka's last friend. Some of these letters are unpublished. The correspondence covers the last years of Kafka's life and sheds new light on his relationship with his friend, who according to Kafka's biographer, Ernst Pawel, had "become the Father, Judge and God" of the dying writer. The letters give us a glimpse into Kafka's relationship with a 25-year-old girl, Dora Diamant, the only woman he ever lived with. Are attached to the set: - 1 typescript by Kafka, with corrections in pencil in his hand, 1 page in-12; - 1 poem in ink, 3 pages in-4; - 1 typescript letter signed by Albert EINSTEIN to Professor Edgar Meyer about Klopstock, 1 page in-4; - 1 typescript letter signed by Thomas MANN to Professor Edgar Meyer about Klopstock, 1938, 1 page in-4; - 1 typewritten letter signed by Franz WERFEL addressed to Dr. Klopstock, 1934, 1 page in-4 (wet); - 2 typewritten letters from Salmann SCHOCKEN addressed to Dr. Klopstock, as well as various typewritten letters addressed to him and one to Thomas Mann; - 19 photographic documents concerning Klopstock. Robert Klopstock, who died in 1972 in New York, was a renowned pulmonary surgeon and scientist, particularly for his important contributions to the treatment of tuberculosis, a disease he had had and during which he had met Kafka at the Sanatorium in 1921. Klopstock had overcome the disease, unlike Kafka, who died on June 3, 1924 in the Kierling Sanatorium in Vienna. Exceptional together.
