DUCHAMP Marcel (1887-1968)
Set of four signed autograph letters addressed to Vitaly HALBERSTADT. Nice, 1931, 4 and a half pages in-4 and one page in-8 in ink on paper (slight tears in the folds and rather artistic ink stains on one letter). Autograph correspondence in ink signed by Marcel Duchamp addressed to Vitaly Halberstadt, chess player like Marcel Duchamp, relative in part to their book Oppositions et Cases Conjuguées sont Réconciliés par Duchamp et Halberstadt published in 1932 in Brussels by Lancel for the Editions de L'Echiquier. "[...] I've waited until I lost brilliantly against Bettbeder to give you news of my form, I don't know yet if I'll be able to take part in the Paris championship." "Dear old man; Received an enthusiastic letter from Lancel. He has found a printer who will make the impression... So the deal is decided and a subscription form will appear in the March issue of the Exchequer... I told him that neither you nor I wanted to share in the costs, nor in the profits. We are only asking for 5% each on each copy sold. Do you agree?". Marcel Duchamp mentions in one of his letters Helen Hessel, who inspired Henri-Pierre Roché -with whom she had an important love affair- the feminine and central character of his famous novel Jules et Jim, an autobiographical novel, Henri-Pierre Roché appearing there under the first name Jim. The latter, a collector and friend of Marcel Duchamp, introduced Helen Hessel to Marcel Duchamp. She will translate into German her chess treatise written in 3 languages Oppositions and Conjugated Cases are Reconciled by Duchamp and Halberstadt. "[...] I am very happy and the German translation works. I will write to you to go and see Mrs. Hessel as soon as she needs to see us [...]". Remarkable documents.
