PROVENANCE Private collection, Paris region Gully A former graffiti artist, Gully is from the Paris region. He works under an assumed name in order to remain anonymous. After a productive career as a graffiti artist between 1992 and the mid2000s, his new works appeared in 2008. That is when he took a new pseudonym to mark a clear break with his earlier activity. Gully means "cool" in slang and has several cultural connotations, from the children's TV channel "Gulli" to a comic-book character invented by Dupuis. All of them provide keys to understanding his work. He takes us into a "cool", light-hearted, childlike world of funny and friendly characters. If he has decided to remain anonymous, it is not for the same reasons as his contemporaries Banksy and Invader but because he considers the works and the stories they tell more important than his name. Gully's paintings are inspired by his discovery of the Appropriation current, which brings together all artists who "consciously copy with strategic thinking". He began to approach the greatest figures in art history and depict amazed children as they discover major paintings by famous artists. His works recall comic books but do not have a narrative. He leaves it up to viewers to make up their own stories. Here, a group of young girls walks through a room where many iconic works by Andy Warhol are on display. Gully creates various kinds of works. Here, he applied a mixture of oil or acrylic paint, markers and aerosols to the canvas. He also makes works on paper. Cheaper, these are intended for people with less means who wish to purchase one of his work
